Church History

Immanuel Lutheran Church is a congregation that has deep roots. Generation after generation of people have been brought into the Christian faith and been nurtured and strengthened in that faith through its ministry.

Immanuel Lutheran Church was organized in the home of Geo. F. Meyer in 1858, the same year that Minnesota became a state. The handful of families that founded this congregation was served by Lutheran missionaries who visited the congregation several times a year.

In 1862, the congregation had grown to nine families and called their first resident pastor, Rev. Johann Horst of Minneapolis .

Following the difficult years during the Civil War, the congregation once again began to grow as they continued to call people into God's kingdom through the preaching of the Lord's Word. In 1868, the congregation relocated to its present location in Hay Creek. Because it was more centrally located, this site was more convenient for a majority of the membership.

The congregation has been active in mission work and church planting throughout its history. Immanuel's pastors have served preaching stations or congregations in Mazeppa, Goodhue, and Belvidere .

The congregation joined The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in 1870 and voted to call its first full time teacher for its Christian day school.

The present church building was built in 1897 and features a 100 foot bell tower and bell inscribed with the words, "Glory be to God on High."

A new school building was constructed and dedicated in 1952. In 1969, Immanuel's school merged with the school of Concordia , Red Wing, (a daughter of Immanuel) to form Concordia-Immanuel Lutheran School . Today, Immanuel's campus consists of the church, school, parsonage, teacherage and cemetery.

The members of Immanuel recognize and give thanks for their rich heritage. They also pray that the Lord will continue to bless them and keep them firmly rooted in His Holy Word.
